The 10 Best Cat Litter Boxes Of 2022

cat litter box

How do you choose the best cat litter box? How can you orient among the different products you find for sale? Wandering through the shelves of supermarkets and pet stores, you will surely notice the presence of different types of litter.

When a cat is in the house, it is mandatory to have a litter box. Even if the cat goes outside and sometimes solves needs outside the house, we must mention that any cat owner must provide their cat with adequate space for private needs. The litter box saves those situations in which the cat can leave “gifts” throughout the house.

The litter, as well as its type, materials, shape, size, price, and even its location in the house, can change the cat’s behavior. Of course, the size of the cat and how comfortable she feels matters also – because if she doesn’t like it, and it doesn’t suit her, then rest assured she won’t use it either.
That’s why the best cat litter box you need is probably on the list that we made below, considering the previous features.

You may be wondering how to proceed to choose the best cat litter box, whether you have just adopted your first cat or already have more than one. Well, there are a few things to keep in mind before you go shopping, and we will discuss each of them in the following lines.

Let’s start, but step by step: a litter box is a kind of container, of different shapes, and sizes, with or without a lid, in which cats (and sometimes other pets) are encouraged to urinate or defecate.

NOTE: The perfect cat litter box – from which no sand or dust will jump – does not exist because all cats are different.  What fits one cat does not mean it will all. But you can choose the best option for you and especially for your cat – because your kitty is the most important in this story.

When you search for the top litter box:

  • First, consider the cat’s age and weight, then relate to her habits and the space you have.
  • Find out what litter the cat you adopted or bought was used to. If it’s a little kitten born in your house or taken from the street, try a litter box – a small tray, in a neutral color.
  • The cat litter box must be individual for use, by only one cat. If you have several cats, each animal must use its litter box.
  • The size of the litter box must be directly proportional to the size of the cat because it must be large enough so that the cat can easily enter it and there is still room for “maneuver”. As an idea, the cat wants space inside the litter box, to be able to turn easily, to comfortably cover her track. If the cat is over a year old, you can already move to a litter box higher than 12 cm, if you don’t want to wake up with sand everywhere.
  • A general rule when choosing the best cat litter box is that the litter box should be as long as the cat is after it has been measured with the cat’s tail.

Opt for a biodegradable plastic litter box, easy to wash. Or:

  • If the litter box is super-smart (automatic) and releases pleasant smells, covering up bad smells… even better.
  • Also, take into account the space you have and the “neighborhoods” – to visually look good and integrate into the space big or small. The litter box must be within reach of the cat, not crowded in a hard-to-reach corner or placed in a corridor where everyone can stumble over it. Ideally, it should be away from machines that make loud noises – such as a washing machine. The bathroom is not the happiest choice if you do not have one with ventilation or a window.

The best cat litter box can satisfy both your taste and that of the cat. However, when you buy one, the cat’s comfort criteria must come first and only then yours. It is also to our advantage.

The uncovered litter (tray) – depends on the material, size, and frame (which prevents the cat from throwing sand outside when covering its excrement). It seems to be the simplest and most accessible option. It does not absorb the smell, but you have to choose special sand for it. If you have children, it’s not the most recommended litter box – because it gives them super easy access to cat feces, which they can play with at any time.

Covered litter can have a multitude of shapes and sizes. It differs from the previous one by the cover above and the access that is made through the side, on a door. At the top, there is a carbon filter, in more modern models, which is also very effective for capturing and eliminating odors.

In the case of owners of very “hard-working” cats, but also of those who care a lot about eliminating any traces of unpleasant odors, covered litter is recommended. It is preferred by cats because it gives them privacy. It does not let the smell spread into the room and retains the sand inside, so you will no longer have dirt around it. Prevents the cat from spreading urine, but also prevents dogs and children to access and touch whatever is inside.

Bad sides: access to the sand is difficult and is even more difficult to clean and wash. The smell is trapped inside, which is unpleasant for the cat, who may prefer another place to defecate. This type of cat litter box has a ventilation system, which keeps the smell inside and can be turned off to provide cats ventilation inside, but at the expense of spreading the smell in the room. It takes up more space and costs more.

The automatic/self-cleaning litter box is also considered the best cat litter box, for people who don’t have time to clean or aren’t home all day long or more days. Of course, you need to have a little more money to spend. Has a sensor that activates a few minutes after the cat has left after defecating and, with a special rake, collects lumps soaked in urine or feces and automatically stores them in a plastic bag, which is easy to throw away. Some automatic litter boxes come with a lid and some without a lid. Self-cleaning models usually come with a lid, but you can find them without it. It’s a more expensive cat litter box, of course. However, it makes an unpleasant noise next to the cat, both when cleaning and when laying new sand.

The weight varies between 700 grams and up to 8 kg. The difference is so great because the litter boxes also have different functions. For example, there is a fan to direct odors to the filter. The excrement is transported in an insulated garbage bag or a separate compartment. This prevents the formation of odors and bacteria. In addition, high-quality automatic litters include a filter or air freshener that minimizes or eliminates odor. If the automatic litter model includes an odor filter or air freshener, they will also need to be replaced after some time. If the litter requires an air freshener, it costs much more.

Furniture-type litter boxes: harmonize with the furniture in the room and have the advantage that they have a pleasant appearance for guests. But most of the time this comes at the expense of the space inside and the comfort of the cat. Because they must be inserted in the harmony of the room, the place where they will be placed may not be to the liking of the cats, as well as the size. Difficult access for cleaning.

NOTE: Another important thing to know is that you need a little shovel. Depending on the granularity of the sand used, the meshes of the holes must be smaller or larger. Recommended is to have two shovels in case you are still testing various types of clumping cat litter. Some covered litter boxes are included with a shovel. We shouldn’t necessarily rely on them. Buy the shovel according to the clumping/sand and not according to the litter box. About sand and shovels, we are going to speak in another article.

How much sand should we put in the litter box?

The litter box layer must be at least 5 centimeters long so that cats can use it easily. A layer that is too thin does not allow you to dig correctly.

How many litter boxes do you need to buy?

The number of cat litter boxes must be equal to the number of cats plus a spare one. Even if we only have one cat, it is advisable to have 2 litter boxes, in two different places in the house, for several reasons. For example, some cats urinate in one place and defecate in another. An extra litter always helps, especially if we happen to miss more than home. If the cat finds the litter dirty, it may look for another place in the house to do her needs.

When to change/clean the litter box?

First, you’ll need to buy the best cat litter box, easy to clean, and easy to manipulate. Our kitten doesn’t like to use a dirty box. Waste must be thoroughly cleaned regularly and completely replaced at least once a week.

How do you litter train your cat?

Litter box use is very quick and easy for most cats, especially if you know how to interpret their behavior correctly. Genetically, they are programmed to bury their manure, which means they will look for a place to dig a hole and cover it after they have finished their work. By providing a litter box to a cat, you only provide the necessary conditions for the manifestation of natural behavior, which the kittens learn from their mother.

If you have just brought a cat home, limit the space in which it has access a little. Don’t lock her in the bathroom, but also still don’t let her walk on her head in a 100 sq m house. Place the litter in a quiet space, where the animal has easy and fast access, but where it does not feel threatened by anything.

Once the cat has calmed down a bit, take it in your arms and gently place it in the litter box, directly on the sand. Gently grab her front paws and make a few movements with them, as if the little cat were digging, herself, the hole in question.

Do not insist on more than that. Do not force the cat to stay in the litter box, or to show any special behavior related to it. After the described maneuver, most cats will choose to leave the litter quietly (possibly shaking the sand off their paws), but don’t worry: they have already learned that there is a suitable space for their “personal” affairs.

If the cat has used a litter box before, it is probably best to use the same type of sand it used before. If you are not satisfied, you can change it gradually, but after the cat has become accustomed to its new litter, and its habits are well established.

Why do cats urinate outside litter box? Useful Causes and Tips

Even if you have the best cat litter box, we made a list of the most common problems that can cause her to find another toilet:

  • You didn’t clean the litter well enough.
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Painful bladder syndrome or interstitial cystitis is a neurological disease that affects the cat’s bladder. Specimens suffering from this condition will try to urinate frequently but without success.
  • Kidney blockages. If the cat has developed kidney stones or other blockages, it will try to urinate often, without success.
  • If the living space is very large, you do not have enough litter boxes.
  • Also, if you have several cats, each of them must have a separate litter box.
  • The litter box is too small.
  • You put too much or too little toilet paper/sand. Cats usually prefer a 5-6 cm layer of sand.
  • The litter box is not easily accessible.
  • Preferences for certain surfaces. Some cats develop preferences to defecate on certain surfaces such as carpets, pottery floors, or bedding.
  • Preferences for certain types of sand. Because they are nocturnal hunters by definition, cats have very sensitive senses. Therefore, the smell or texture of certain hygienic bedding may not be pleasing.
  • Preferences for certain litter locations. Like humans and dogs, cats are more likely to enjoy certain places to defecate. This means that if the litter is not placed in a place that is pleasant for them, they will avoid it.
  • Impossibility to use the litter. Older cats, or those with physical limitations, may have difficulty using certain litter. The model you have chosen must be suitable for her needs and this is very important.
  • Associating the litter with something negative. One of the many reasons why a cat stops using regular litter is the association with a moment that scared her or caused her pain. If at some point the cat had health problems and had pain when urinating, for example, after healing, it may refuse to enter the litter because there she felt some discomfort.
  • Stress can also be a factor. Cats can be stressed by certain events that you, as the owner, do not perceive as traumatic. Changes in the usual routine – moving house, the appearance of new family members, the appearance of other animals in the house – can generate anxiety for the little cat.
  • Conflicts in houses with several cats. When several cats live in the house, it happens that one of the “masters” the litter. In these cases, even if there are no visible conflicts, a dominant cat can cause stress and litter problems for the others.

NOTE: Do not place the bowl of food next to the litter box.
